One agency in Maine has a "scattered site" apartment living program operating in a number of large cities and towns in Maine. This was put into operation over two years ago with the consultation and assistance of the Independent Living Program staff and other staff in the Department's Bureau of Child and Family Services. This agency has recently expanded it's program services into the greater Portland, Maine area and will is planning to establish the program in the Bangor and Lewiston, Maine areas within the next few months.
Parents of teens and young adults with special needs are always concerned about their transition into adulthood. The program offers a supported living experience on a college campus in Bel Air, California. Based on the needs of each resident, the program provides experiences and opportunities to learn and practice the skills necessary to be successful in adult life.
Young adults in our program will enroll in school, obtain and maintain employment, and maintain their very own living space. Residents start out in an on campus apartment where they gain comfort and knowledge in the areas they need assistance in to be independent. Once they are showing the independence and maturity needed to be in their own apartment, they are assisted in transitioning into the community in their very own apartment.
